Wrapping labels on curved surfaces
Fit the rectangle to the cylinder with the cap on. Wrinkles are air channels, not cosmetic flaws.
A rectangle does not naturally love a cylinder. If the wrap length is wrong, the film either leaves a peel tab or overlaps into a thick ridge. If the tube tapers, a rectangle designed for a straight wall will buckle. Wrapping is a fit problem that looks like an adhesive problem in photographs.
Measure with the cap on
Skirts hide several millimetres of height. Operators label assembled tubes. Measure assembled tubes. Record the brand, because a “2.0 mL cryovial” is not a standard diameter across manufacturers.
Overlap policy
Some SOPs want a few millimetres of label-on-label overlap so the free edge is not adhesive-on-plastic. That can reduce lift if the overlap is smooth. Too much overlap creates a step that gloves catch, especially on flags. Write the overlap down and print to that length.
Wrinkles and air channels
Wrinkles are air channels waiting for nitrogen, steam, or alcohol. Apply from one end with pressure, not by slapping the center. On small vials, a thumb roll along the wrap is more reliable than a palm slap. See tube and vial labels.
Tapers and writing patches
Conical tubes have a straight section. Stay there. Writing patches are often rougher or coated; adhesives may not wet them. If the patch is the only flat-looking area, test it explicitly.
Barcodes on a curve
Curvature changes apparent bar width for linear codes. Keep linear symbols on the largest practical diameter or switch to 2D. Quiet zones must not fall into the overlap. ISO/IEC 15416 graders on flat cards will not see wrap distortion; your handheld will.
Templates beat memory
Keep a physical template—a card with the allowed height and a string for circumference—beside the printer. When a new case of tubes arrives, compare before printing a thousand labels. A one-minute check prevents a week of flags. If you use software templates, name them after the tube SKU, not after a person.
Flags need a stated length and a stated fold. An improvised tail that is too long will catch every box divider. If flags are used for 2D codes, test insertion into the storage box with gloves on. Bench dexterity is not freezer dexterity.
Overlap that lands on a mold seam is a hinge. If you can feel a ridge through the film, liquid and nitrogen can feel it too. Rotate the wrap so the join sits on a smoother wall, even if that means the barcode faces a different way—then update the scanner expectation. Geometry and data orientation are one design, not two afterthoughts.

Can I cut labels down with scissors?
You can, but you will vary wrap length and quiet zones. Cutting is a process change. Prefer a correctly sized die.
Why do labels flag after LN2?
The film stiffens and any unseated overlap springs out. Full wet-out before the plunge matters.
Should labels cover graduation marks?
Only if you do not need those marks. Many SOPs forbid covering them. Design height accordingly.
Is a longer label always safer?
Longer can mean more overlap and more snag. Safer is ‘correct length with seated edges.’
